Grit & Grain Studio – Post Mortem

For the month of May I had the opportunity to hold down some space at Colourfield – the studio I frequent for their life drawing sessions – for the express purpose of hosting a photography studio popup.

Of all the reasons I don’t shoot more, space is right at the top of the list – especially when it comes to shooting models. Having control of the environment means everyone can relax a little more and get into the feeling they showed up to feel. Having a neutral space – a studio instead of someone’s home, hotel room, etc., is also tantamount to how I want to build my credibility as a photographer.

The grander plan for the studio is full-out collaboration. I want a space wiith membership access for anyone who shoots regularly but is missing those one or two things that keep them from creating. Lighting, backdrop, furnishings, props, space? Really, everything but the cameara.

But if you need camera and lenses, I’m sure something can be worked out.

While I’m grateful to have the space for May and the chance it gave me to work out things like logistics and promotions, version 2.0 of the studio will need to be in a bigger space that is more accessible and open to foot traffic. I want a gallery wall and space for people to congregate and host events. I would love for it to be a first-Friday stop and a place for the curious to get a little more insight as to what it might take to capture a great shot.

A few of the many captures from the month (more to come whenever I finally put my portfolio pages together!).
