Garbage Town USA

They might call it Trasheville – as a play on Asheville. It all depends who you talk to. There is still a healthy punk scene that is forever supported by the artisans and students and focused spirit that this is very much an arts town.

Like any city, Asheville has its growing pains that look like anyone else’s – more people moving here, higher priced property, increased rents, pricing pressure from greedy multi-national conglomerates.

There is some sweet irony in hearing that a huge apartment building project was shorted because so much of the South Slope district is built on…trash. It’s as though the city’s history can’t do much to support its future!

“It seems to be Asheville’s past of burying all their trash and that with the foundation being a little off-center, they said it would be about six months for them to kind of take it apart and rebuild it again and then they would be back on track,” – Rhea Lidowsky – marketing project manager for Chemist Distilling.

Sure, this headline is a little dated. Construction on the building didn’t make it past their very-optimistic parking decks. The whole thing still stands. On one hand – hurray for more parking in South Slope? On the other hand – more cars in South Slope never helped anyone.
