Grit & Grain Photo Studio

, ,

Putting this under “projects” because it certainly seems to be turning into one.

The end goal: I want to open a collaborative/co-working-esque photo studio/ creative space in Asheville. The space will be focused on opening up resources to photographers to make the art they’re dreaming of and to businesses who need great images.

The space will be set up with fully equipped studio spaces that can be rented by the hour or the day. Every studio will have customizable lighting and staging/ props available to use. Cameras and lenses will eventually be available for rent.

I also aim to have a flexible community space open for all manner of events, workshops, meetings, or just open-working areas. This space will feature gallery walls highlighting member’s works and featured local artists.

Initial offerings:

  • Affordable and flexible hourly/daily studio space rentals
  • Monthly photography classes covering everything from beginner shooting to editing techniques
  • Regular guest instructors for additional workshops
  • Numerous open events.
  • Kegerator with beer from a sponsor brewery, because why not?

Eventual Offerings, because it can’t all be done on day one:

  • Camera and lens rentals
  • Editing workstations – machines built to easily handle all manner of photo editing software (Lightroom/ Photoshop, Affinity, etc.)
  • Large format printer/ printing available for reduced cost prints
  • Equipment repairs!
  • Partnerships with local galleries, framers, patrons

Memberships

With the intention of having an invested community around the space, membership tiers will be the revenue mainstay for supporting the place. Tiered benefits will include:

  • Priority studio time (set hours per month)
  • Discounted event space rates
  • Access to premium rental equipment
  • Discounted rate for large format printing
  • Features in our online gallery
  • Exclusive Events
  • Access to group-rate discounts for everything from insurances to new equipment

As of today (May 2, 2025) I am running a pilot of this idea in a fractional space for the duration of May. I’m calling it a “pop up studio” and I’ve got a few goals:

  • Increase awareness and gain support for a more permanent space.
  • Take lots of great pictures of people.
  • Host at least one photography-based event.
  • Sell more prints.
  • Connect with local photographers, models, and artists.
