New Rules for Social Engagement

I am absolutely the kind of guy who can’t be trusted to spend “just a minute” on social media because I will absolutely lose the next two hours of my life to it. I get sucked in even though I KNOW there is rarely anything interesting out there.

If things were perfect, I would just chuck all the accounts I have and bail. Life would be peaceful, no?

In the back of my head I know, as a business owner, that these apps have some purpose. After all, most of Instagram is just ads for businesses or junk content stealing away fragments of our attention to sell to advertisers. It’s rare to see genuine people online anymore – the longstanding case of the Dead Internet Theory.

For months at a time I will walk away from these platforms – killing the apps off my phone only to get dragged back in because someone texts me to say, “did you see the thing I sent you on IG?”

Sucked back in.

As I prepare to launch some new stuff through OutWord, I am priming the accounts to share with the people who happen to follow me – which means there needs to be some rules:

  • No analytics. Fuck the numbers.
  • Create the kind of stuff you want to see. Don’t call it content. It is so much better than that.
  • 15 minutes. That’s all you get across all of the “socials” each day. Your phone will be a merciless bitch.
  • Unfollow the garbage. Try to find the good stuff elsewhere. If social media is the mouth of the river, try to find the source.
